South Dakota: Godless

While the biggest thing that comes to mind for many people when they think of South Dakota is Mount Rushmore, the movies and TV shows set in this state tend to center more heavily around Western culture. You may recall that hit films like Hidalgo, The Revenant and Calamity Jane all have ties to the state, as does the highly anticipated upcoming HBO film Deadwood (you can catch that one next month!).

So while Netflix doesn’t have many shows that are explicitly set in South Dakota, there are plenty that are inspired by that strong Western feel. If you want to capture the spirit of South Dakota, let us suggest checking out the original series Godless.

Godless is technically set in New Mexico, but it still gets down to what we love most about the Wild West. This Emmy-winning series follows the conflict between an outlaw and a former member of his gang, who has found refuge in a town populated entirely by women. Michelle Dockery, Jeff Daniels and Jack O’Connell star. With only one season of 7 episodes, Godless makes for a quick and entertaining binge. It’s a great way to get your Western on if you’re in the mood to channel some South Dakota spirit!
