8. Black Summer

Premiere Date: April 11, 2019

Season: 1 (8 episodes)

Last July, it was announced that Netflix was developing a companion prequel series to the Syfy zombie series, Z Nation. The series was later revealed to be titled, Black Summer. It’s created by John Hyams and Z Nation co-creator Karl Schaefer.

Black Summer focuses on a mother named Rose who is separated from her daughter in the early days of the zombie apocalypse. Over the course of the summer months, Rose goes on a dangerous journey to find her daughter, stopping at nothing. She eventually joins a small group of survivors as they are tasked with the new normal of the deadly world.

Actress Jaime King stars in the lead role as Rose. Her casting was announced the same time the show was given a series order. The cast of Black Summer also includes Justin Chu Cary, Kelsey Flower, Gwynyth Walsh, Christine Lee, Mustafa Alabssi, and Erika Hau.

Whereas Z Nation took a more comedic take on the zombie genre, Black Summer is rumored to be more serious in tone. It will also not feature any characters from Z Nation considering it takes place well before the Syfy series. For Z Nation fans hoping for some sort of crossover, don’t hold your breath. Z Nation first premiered in 2014 and lasted five seasons before being canceled late last December.  With the cancellation, it kills any future opportunity for the two series to cross over in any way. It seems as though that Netflix and the creative team behind Black Summer want the series to be its own entity without relying on Z Nation.
