Great news for all you Walking Dead fans. Along with the three movies announced earlier, AMC is working on a new Walking Dead spin-off series.

Originally reported by Deadline, this news comes most likely as a result of the hit show The Walking Dead seeing lower ratings and the departure of its main stars. The current season, nine, saw Andrew Lincoln and Lauren Cohan exit the show in the first half of episodes. Additionally, Danai Gurira has signed on for a recurring role in the next season.

The departures of Lincoln and Gurira are intertwined with the films that AMC announced recently. All of these pieces of news don’t seem to bode well for the series, which would explain the kick to a new spinoff series. Also, the loss of its main stars over the past few seasons are most likely a major cause of declining ratings.

This would be the second branch of The Walking Dead as Fear the Walking Dead started in 2015 and is still running. It’s set in the same universe but in a different location. There was some crossover between the two shows as Lennie James took his “Morgan” character to the other program.

A new spinoff series could re-invigorate fans to a new set of stories, and even bring in old characters to explore the world. Creator of the comics Robert Kirkman has built this world in which the readers and viewers of the show understand the basic rules of the story. They understand that this “virus” is affecting more than just the core group of survivors and any amount of shows can be set in any number of places.

We’ll see how this new series may interact with the new films and the past shows. Additionally, the comic series is still ongoing, so the subject matter is practically endless. Will this be a new direction for The Walking Dead? Or could this be a dire attempt to retrieve viewership?
