Netflix is making a new TV series based on One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez.

One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez is the latest classic novel to score a TV series adaptation at Netflix. According to a report from Deadline, Netflix agreed to a deal with the family of García Márquez to make this TV series happen.

One Hundred Years of Solitude was published in 1967. García Márquez died in 2014, and, according to the report, he had refused to sell the rights to the series. His sons, Gonzalo García Barcha and Rodrigo Garcia, will be producers on the project.

One Hundred Years of Solitude will be a Spanish language series, which is what García Márquez would have wanted, according to a statement from his sons. Like Netflix’s Narcos, the series will be filmed in Colombia, according to the report.

Obviously, this is an excellent acquisition by Netflix. There’s so much to love about this book, and I think Netflix sees they need to continue pushing the streaming industry forward with big projects like this one. This series is sure to be a hit internationally, and I’m willing to bet it will be a major success in the US, as well.

There is still a lot we don’t know about this project yet, though. There is no showrunner attached, according to the report, so Netflix will be on the lookout for someone to lead this series. After that, they’ll start getting into casting the show, and like most Netflix shows, this project should have some huge names signing on in the very near future.

This is great news for fans of the novel, and we hope Netflix is able to do this great story justice.
