Oscars 2019: Netflix wins four Oscars, including Best Director
The 2019 Oscars brought Netflix more gold, as the streaming service won four Academy Awards for Roma and Period. End of Sentence.
Netflix was a winner at the 2019 Oscars, taking home multiple Academy Awards during Sunday’s ceremony for its two critically acclaimed films.
Alfonso Cuaron’s critical darling Roma won three Oscars. The biggest was Cuaron’s win for Best Director, which was expected since he’d also won that award at the Golden Globes. The film also took home trophies for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Cinematography.
While Roma was also up for Best Picture, it lost the night’s biggest award to Green Book. Star Yalitza Aparicio lost the Best Actress trophy to Olivia Colman for her work in The Favourite.
Over on the non-fiction side, the documentary Period. End of Sentence. picked up the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short.
But it’s Roma that will get the most attention, as Netflix walked away with one of the top categories at the 2019 Oscars. You can watch Cuaron’s acceptance speech by playing the video below:
The victories were big news for Netflix, which tripled its number of Academy Awards in one evening. Previously, the streaming service only had two Oscar wins—one in 2017 for The White Helmets, also in the Best Documentary Short category, and the other in 2018 when Icarus won in the Best Documentary Feature category.
Netflix has been nominated for 14 Oscars since it began producing its own film projects in 2013; that’s a pretty good haul for six years of work. Netflix movies and TV shows have also won eleven Screen Actors Guild Awards, eight Peabody Awards, 31 Daytime Emmy Awards and 63 Primetime Emmy Awards.
This weekend’s wins, particularly for Roma, will certainly inspire Netflix to push further in the film world and try to rival the major movie studios for more Oscars in the future.
Roma as well as Period. End of Sentence. are still available for streaming now on Netflix. You can also see more than two dozen other Oscar-winning films through Netflix; click the banner above to check them out.
