Hats off to Alfonso Caron who has just won the Oscar for Best Director for his work on Netflix’s Roma!

Roma won big at this year’s Oscars and in particular, it was director/writer/creator Alfonso Cuaron that walked away with the most wins. Up against a solid stack of incredibly talented directors, Cuaron snagged the Oscar for Best Director. It was pretty much expected he’d take the win in this category, but seeing him accept yet another Oscar was just as glorious as the previous times on this spectacular night.

However, while we are celebrating Roma and all their Oscars, I have to take a moment to let it sink that it did not win the Oscar for Best Picture. Should it have? Yes, yes it should have. Instead, in an unexpected twist, Green Book won the award, leaving many to wonder–why? Sure, Roma got a lot of recognition but after the amount of awards Cuaron and the movie had already won, it felt like it was a given that it would also win Best Picture.

Congrats are in order for Green Book, although it was certainly not the number one guess on everyone’s list. All in all, however, Roma had a solid night at the Oscars and Cuaron can rest assured he delivered one hell of a movie and the Academy, critics, and fans alike were all celebrating each and every award with him tonight. But still, the Best Picture snub is going to hurt for some time to come.

Other directors in this category included:

  • BlacKkKlansman: Spike Lee
  • Cold War: Paweł Pawlikowski
  • The Favourite: Yorgos Lanthimos
  • Vice: Adam McKay

Congratulations to all the winners at this year’s Oscars! But a very special congratulations to Roma for making a movie everyone can be proud of and one that will forever be a part of our lives. But seriously, that Best Picture snub was not cool.
