Is Abducted in Plain Sight on Netflix real?
By Bryce Olin
Is the documentary Abducted in Plain Sight on Netflix real and based on true events? Unfortunately, the events in the documentary actually happened.
Abducted in Plain Sight is Netflix’s biggest true crime documentary in a long time. Thousands of viewers are discovering the new documentary every day and are similarly horrified by the events presented in the film.
The film, directed by Skye Borgman and released in 2017, tells the story of Jan Broberg who, at 12 years old, was kidnapped by family friend Robert Berchtold. Over the course of several years, Berchtold manipulates and blackmails the Broberg family and Jan, while abusing the young girl.
It’s the most unbelievable true crime documentary I’ve ever seen. It’s crazy; there’s no other way to describe it. As The Ringer pointed out, you have to see it to believe it.
While the film was released in 2017, it didn’t become mainstream popular until it hit Netflix recently. With the film’s popularity, we’ve seen a few viewers asking whether or not Abducted in Plain Sight is real. So, is Abducted in Plain Sight based on a real story?
According to a report from Decider, Abducted in Plain Sight is a real documentary and an account of real events. It did happen, and there have been several books written by members of the Broberg family. It’s also been the subject of a Dr. Phil episode and other TV shows, according to the report.
I hate to break the bad news to viewers who were hoping this story was fake, but it’s all real and horrifying. If you like true crime documentaries, I highly recommend watching this documentary. As mentioned, it’s really hard to watch at times and it’s very disturbing overall.
