Netflix has no plans to save Shadowhunters, but that doesn’t mean the streaming giants are making the right decision.

Fans of the Freeform series Shadowhunters have heard nothing but bad news of late, as Netflix officially decided not to save the series. It will be ending on Freeform in 2019.

Shadowhunters, which follows the events of the Cassandra Clare book series “The Mortal Instruments,” has struggled with ratings for a long time. However, Netflix has been known to save series with strong fanbases in the past and letting Shadowhunters pass them by could be a huge mistake.

Why?

The easiest example would be to look at the current Netflix hit series You, which stars Dan Humphrey — er, I mean, Penn Badgley — and struggled in its short time on Lifetime. You absolutely crushed the ratings once it came to Netflix. While I do not believe Shadowhunters would do the same, necessarily, there would be a significant boost to the ratings that, theoretically, would be worth saving.

Throw in the benefits of targeted marketing to a fanbase that has, quite literally, done a few insane things in its desperation to get the series saved by Netflix, and Netflix could ride the series to not only a great addition to its book-turned-series repertoire but also thousands of added subscribers.

It also has to be noted that the competition is coming for Netflix. Sure, they should still remain the streaming giants for the foreseeable future, but the upcoming launch of Disney’s streaming service changes everything.

Disney has Star Wars, Marvel, and a multitude of other properties to work with that other streaming services do not. Those are the type of properties that make people subscribe for just one series.

If anything, Netflix should be trying to prove to its audience (and to potential content producers), that they are willing to snatch up series like Shadowhunters in the future.

Oh, and, don’t forget, even the series producer does not believe this is the end for Shadowhunters, according to Digital Spy.
