The CW renews Legacies for season 2

The Originals spin-off, Legacies, has been renewed for a second season. The CW confirmed this along with nine other shows being renewed.

The students at the Salvatore Boarding School for the Young and Gifted will get another year in the school. Legacies has been officially renewed for season 2.

The Originals spin-off always promised to be successful. Despite being ordered just from a script (the only CW freshman series not to film a pilot in time for the May Upfronts in 2018), The CW was certain that it would have a fan base. And it certainly has.

Legacies is already one of the strongest shows on The CW, beating the likes of Black Lightning and Legends of Tomorrow for live audiences, according to TV Series Finale. Out of the fall rookie shows, it’s second in ratings behind Charmed, which was also on the list for a renewal. Fans of All American are still waiting to hear about the fate of their show.

Ordering the spin-off was certainly a no-brainer from the concept. There are still plenty of fans of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. It was also clear that the final season of the Mikaelson family drama was setting up for this spin-off, introducing Hope and fully fleshing out her character. Bringing in Alaric Saltzman as the principal of the school was the best thing to draw The Vampire Diaries fans back in, especially with the promise of his children and other guest stars from the earlier season.

It’s not clear when Legacies will fit into the next TV season schedule. Considering the ratings, it makes sense to keep it in the fall and Thursday nights seem to be working well for it. Coming in after Supernatural certainly makes sense since it means two fantasy shows back to back, but The CW may switch the night to have its longest-running show act as a lead-in for a new series.
