17. Hush (2016)

Director: Mike Flanagan
Cast: John Gallagher Jr., Michael Trucco, Kate Siegel

I’m always interested to see original ideas in the horror genre. Hush is a slasher film about a deaf young deaf woman (Madison) who lives in the woods, in total seclusion. An intruder looking to break in observes Madison and realizes she is deaf, he then enters the house and Maddie’s quest to survive begins.

There is one central location, the characters are limited, and all the events take place on the same day. It’s a real independent slasher film that makes use of a simple story device – a game of cat and mouse.

The pacing of the scenes is excellent. You can almost imagine the story unfolding as a silent film with just visuals and sound effects. When you think about it, silence is precisely what our protagonist is experiencing.

There are a plethora of emotions that you can feel while watching a horror flick, what makes this picture unique is that you feel like her disability becomes yours as a madman stalks her in the middle of nowhere.

Hush should give you a good scare if you’re looking for a well-done horror flick. It’s also the last horror film on this list, so take advantage!
