Barack and Michelle Obama and their production company acquired The Fifth Risk by Michael Lewis for a possible adaptation at Netflix.
The Obamas and their production company acquired the rights to the book The Fifth Risk by Michael Lewis for a possible Netflix series or movie, according to a report from Deadline.
This project, which could be the first for the Obamas and their Netflix deal, is in the very beginning stages, and now, after the acquisition, their team, along with Netflix, will look at the possible ways to turn this book into a story.
The Fifth Risk focuses on several government departments, including the Department of Agriculture, Department of Energy and the Department of Commerce, and how those departments work, basically, according to the report. More specifically, Deadline reported the book tells stories of “chaos and mismanagement” in those departments after the Trump administration started in 2016.
According to Deadline, Lewis interviewed many in those departments and from the Obama administration who feared the new staff running those departments were unqualified for their positions. Lewis also gave evidence of how spending cuts and incompetence in those areas could be catastrophic for the country.
At this point, it’s unclear how this book and its stories could be adapted for a possible Netflix series or movie. The Obamas and Netflix have not commented on or confirmed the news, according to the Deadline report, although Deadline is reporting Lewis will confirm the news in an upcoming episode of Kate Couric’s podcast.
