At the end of the fourth episode of Fox’s The Gifted season two, the Mutant Underground were dealt a devastating blow when the Hellfire Club’s Inner Circle broke into Lynwood Hospital, freeing a mutant locked in the Maximum Security wing. Who could this mutant be?
In the closing moments of Fox’s The Gifted season two, episode four, currently streaming on Hulu, viewers got the briefest of glimpses at a mutant freed by the Inner Circle. Speculation is already rife as to who it could be, and why this particular mutant is important to the Inner Circle.
Just from viewing the first four episodes of The Gifted season two, it has become obvious that Reeva Payge, leader of the Inner Circle, has some devastating plan in mind to bring about a mutant utopia. Part of her plan requires Andy Strucker to be able to destroy certain elements; his training for the mission is evidence considering it was very strategically laid out. The new mutant in the grips of the Inner Circle will presumably also have a large part to play in Reeva’s plan. Now, the concern is who this mutant could be, and more importantly, what are they capable of?
The brief glimpse of the mutant seemed to suggest an extremely pale face, as though it’s a trait dictated by her mutant DNA. With this characteristic factored in, a likely candidate could be Caliban, the Morlock from the X-Men comic books who has the ability to sense mutants from a distance.
As of now, the Mutant Underground have an advantage in this area. John Proudstar, aka Thunderbird, has the ability to track mutants. But, Caliban’s power is known to be much stronger and more effective. He is essentially like a human-Cerebro, making him a useful ally to have around. With his powers at their disposal, the Inner Circle could find and recruit any mutant they want. There is, however, a chance that the mutant could be someone else, even more devastating — a fourth Frost sister.
In the current run of X-23’s solo comic series, the Frost sisters have been working to save their fourth and fifth sisters. According to X-Men comic lore, the three Stepford Cuckoos are devastating; all five together are unstoppable. As we have seen from the first season of The Gifted, and the few episodes of this season, the Frosts tend to use their psychic powers quite indiscriminately. Perhaps that is why the fourth sister was hidden away in the Maximum Security section?
Of course, the Inner Circle might just go to the source of the Frosts’ power — the host from where their clone DNA came from, the White Queen herself, Emma Frost.
In the X-Men comics, Emma Frost is one of the most powerful telepathic mutants alive. Her list of accomplishments includes leading the Hellfire Club, the Hellions, and even the X-Men, for many years. In this scenario, her power would give the Inner Circle a huge advantage.
As exciting as this prospect could be, it is unlikely that Emma Frost will be in the series due to rights issues between Fox and Marvel, which was confirmed by Emma Dumont at Fan Expo Canada. Then again, considering the new deal between the two companies, could there be a chance of someone like Emma Frost making an appearance in The Gifted? We will have to wait till next episode to find out!
