Venom starring Tom Hardy premieres in theaters on Friday, Oct. 5. Will the film be released on Netflix in the near future?
Venom is the biggest superhero of the fall, and the film hits theaters on Oct. 5. Netflix has been adding all the latest Marvel titles, so Venom is coming to Netflix, right?
Wrong, unfortunately. Unless something major happens in the near future, Venom will not be released on Netflix. The film, like Spider-Man: Homecoming, is distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing, and you might have noticed there are no new Sony movies on Netflix. That’s because Sony has an exclusive deal with Starz that takes all the new Sony movies to Starz.
According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, that deal lasts through 2021. So, unless Starz or Sony opt out of the deal, every Sony Pictures movie released in theaters through the end of 2021 will be released on Starz after its theatrical run.
Usually, those Sony movies remain on Starz for a year and a half to two years before the rights are sold to a cable network like FX for cable reruns. It’s possible Netflix could pick up the film after it is removed from Starz. It has happened like that in the past, but the chances of it happening for Venom are pretty slim.
Netflix usually stays away from expensive licensing rights for new movies like that and waits a few more years to pick them up. The TV and movie landscape is constantly changing and shifting, though, so anything could happen.
We’ll let you know more about the release of Venom in theaters and if there is a chance the movie, or other movies like it, will be added to the streaming service in the future.
On the bright side, Avengers: Infinity War is coming to Netflix later this year, along with Ant-Man and the Wasp in the first part of 2019.
