Celebrity chef Joe Bastianich and MasterChef Junior return for season 6 of the junior cooking reality show.

The first three episodes of the sixth season of MasterChef Junior  are in the books and streaming on Hulu. The popular cooking show kicked off the season with a 2 hour premiere on March 2, 2018.

The premiere introduce fans to the stiff competition this season. It also marked the return of Joe Bastianich.

Fans of the celebrity chef have missed his wit and cutting sarcasm.

In the first episode Girls Just Wanna Have Fun/Junior Edition  the field of young girls was narrowed down to 12. In the second half of the premiere episode, The Boys Are Back In Town the field of guys was also narrowed down to 12 contestants.

The top 24 contestants were revealed in the third episode on Friday March 9.   12 girls and 12 boys received MasterChef Junior aprons. Gordon Ramsay, Christina Tosi and Joe Bastianich  handpicked the top 24 from 40 junior home cooks. The reality show culminates with one of the junior cooks winning a the title of MasterChef Junior and a cash prize of $100,000.

What would you do with $100,000? The junior chefs have it all figured out. Check out their thoughts in the clip below.

In the third episode the junior chefs took on their first  Mystery Box challenge. The boxes contained 26 ingredients, one for each letter of the alphabet. The contestants also had access to the MasterChef pantry.

Mystery Box Challenge top 3 Dishes

Two of the top three dishes in the first challenge were cooked by girls.

Beni: Beni fixed a herb-crusted steak with ginger quinoa and sautéed kale with dill and yogurt sauce  for the judges. The dish melded complex flavors together and made Beni a forerunner in the first episode

Henry: Henry also used lamb as his protein, and quinoa as a side. He grilled lamb chops with tzatziki, quinoa and zucchini.

Remy: Remy and her sister Olivia both made the top 24. Remy impressed the judges with a lamb chop and eggplant dish. The small wonder butchered the lamb herself before cooking it to the perfect temperature.

The winner: Remy won the first Mystery Box challenge.

Elimination challenge – fruit tart

Many experienced chefs have trouble producing the perfect fruit tart. The crust must be thin and flaky, and thick enough to support the filling and fruit topping. Some of the chefs managed to save themselves from elimination by the appearance of their tarts. The chefs with the best looking tarts were sent to the balcony to watch the reminder of the challenge. Ariana, Beni, Olivia, Evan, Emily, Sophia, Anthony, Henry and Maria quickly made their way to the balcony leaving six cooks in jeopardy of going home. The remaining cooks (Zia, Lindsay, Avery, Quani, Juelz, and Ben) faced some tough criticism from the judges.

One of the contestants cried when Gordon called her up for a closer look at her tart.  Unfortunately it is a competition and every week two contestants must leave the MasterChef Junior kitchen. This week was not exception. The  pursuit of the MasterChef Junior title ended for two of the talented junior chefs.
