6. Anne with an E

This year, Netflix went a little crazy with the book adaptations. Turns out, it was an effort that really paid off. We got gems like 13 Reasons Why, A Series of Unfortunate Events, and the wonderful Anne with an E.

This one hits you right in the nostalgia. Many of us grew up reading the books or watching the 1985 Megan Follows miniseries. Anne seems to have thoughtfully considered all aspects of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s carefully crafted universe, breathing new life into the already beautiful 1908 source material.

The updates made to the story are smart and clean. Beautiful visuals really enhance the tale and draw us into binge all seven episodes in one sitting.

Amybeth McNulty is the fresh-faced fearless leader of the Anne cast. She hasn’t appeared in much work before the Netflix show, and consequently, her work is untainted by bad habits or audience expectations. Her male counterpart, Gilbert Blythe, played by Lucas Jade Zumann, is equally adorable.

Critical voices of the show noted its darker themes and “lack of subtlety,” but if you keep an open mind, the more adult changes are actually part of the draw of the show. It’s unique.  As Hanh Nguyen of Indie Wire smartly points out, “Anne with an E dares to get bold and messy. It might push the messaging too far sometimes, but like its heroine, it rarely feels insincere.”

So if you read the book or just like your drama with a touch of fun and history, Anne with an E is definitely for you.
