8. Narcos

I would argue that if there are two things Netflix does really well its high-tension, twisted dramas and historically-informed fiction. Narcos combines the best of these. At times, the truth portrayed here is downright difficult to watch.

This show has earned a big boy TV-MA rating, thanks to its graphic portrayal of sexuality, substance abuse, and, of course, violence. It does not shy away from depicting the truth accurately, no matter how frightening or intense.

Narcos is a pretty darn timely tale of drugs and greed. It follows the story of the various DEA and other law enforcement officials who relentlessly pursue the wanted Colombian cocaine lord Pablo Escobar, among other dangerous criminals in the drug trade.

I love that you can look up most of the characters after the show and read about their real lives. for instance, Escobar was actually a real Colombian kingpin!

The cast delivers every moment with so much honesty. Pedro Pascal, in particular, is a freakin’ boss as DEA agent Javier Peña. You may know him from his brief stint on the HBO mega-hit Game of Thrones.

This third and newest season is the most critically praised of the show so far. It sits at a solid 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. In what I think is the most accurate reflection of this newest installment, Liz Shannon Miller from Indie Wire said, “It is one of the great examples of shows that have improved thanks to the opportunity to grow and evolve.” Binge through all three season this weekend to find out for yourself!
