5. Drew Barrymore

Drew Barrymore was kind of the Noah Schnapp before there was Noah Schnapp. You know what I mean. She was the star of a few key 80s sci-fi and fantasy flicks and seemed to keep this momentum into the 90s and early 2000s.

Her first major appearance was in the Spielberg classic E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, a movie which, of course, partly inspired Stranger Things. She also starred in Firestarter, the story of a pyrokinetic little girl.

In the 90s, she became the face of the Scream franchise, which terrified teens everywhere. In 2001, she was pretty much the responsible party for getting her now iconic mind-bending film Donnie Darko into theatres. Like Noah Schnapp, young Barrymore became a face easy to associate with fantasy and terror.

Although Drew isn’t exactly a Tom Hanks-caliber actor these days, it would still be a nice call back to see her in Stranger Things 3. ST has already made at least one sort of self-referential casting decision like this when they famously chose Sean Astin (of Goonies fame) to play Bob Newby. Goonies was an inspiration for the series just as ET is, so I wouldn’t see it as too much of a stretch if we ever saw Drew appear in an upcoming season.

However, this is not to say I think it likely that she will appear. Barrymore has been appearing in more Adam Sandler comedies than dramas these days, and perhaps a role in such a serious universe would be a stretch for her.
