Episode: “Chapter Six: The Monster”

In Chapter Five, there is the first real conflict between the group of kids, at least in a very palpable sense. As they are searching for the gate to the Upside Down by using the electromagnetic pull of the gate on their compasses, Eleven is messing it up purposefully to avoid having to confront the horrors of the Upside Down. When this is discovered, she ends up flinging and knocking out Lucas with her powers, thus causing her to run from the boys.

As a result, El is left to fend for herself for quite some time, essentially all of Chapter Six. Subsequently, she’s put in a precarious position or two, most notably figuring out how she’s going to feed herself. Ultimately, she resorts to her favorite with Eggo waffles but has to find a way to get them with no money. Thus, she uses her abilities for “evil” as she walks into a grocery store, loads up on Eggo boxes and then just walks out, slamming the doors in the angry manager’s face.

Now, I know you might be wondering why a moment where Eleven is shoplifting and is ostensibly in the wrong would be this high on this list. However, when you consider when this moment happens in the show, it shows the strength and resilience developing with her character. This leads to a big moment (which we’ll get to) soon after and ultimately how the season ends. But without a moment like this, that growth and development in terms of courage and strength would’ve seemed like a big jump.
