7. The bathtub

Episode: “Chapter Seven: The Bathtub”

As Eleven’s abilities are almost fully realized by Chapter Seven, Joyce and everyone else decides to take drastic measures in trying to utilize El to locate Will in the Upside Down. To do so, they have to create a makeshift sensory-deprivation pool for her. That’s where “the bathtub” comes into play.

By this point in the season, we’ve seen that Eleven has many traumatizing and horrible memories of being in sensory-deprived situations. However, that’s one of the beautiful things about this moment in particular. For one, the strength that she shows to power through those bad thoughts for the sake of her friends and a good cause is heartwarming. What’s more, Joyce comforting her is also a touching moment as viewers have to be glad to see El be nurtured in such a way.

On top of that, though, the moment is made even bigger with both confirmations of key elements of the plot and the effects that these confirmations have. She discovers that Barb, unfortunately, died in the Upside Down and isn’t coming back. However, not all hope is lost as she does find Will still alive — albeit barely — in the alternate dimension’s version of his fort at home.

Subsequently, bold decisions are made soon after. Hopper decides to go into the Upside Down to rescue Will but in exchange for Eleven’s whereabouts. What’s more, the eventual showdown with the Demogorgon comes about because of all of this. It’s a crucial moment to the plot, but one that’s also filled with a ton of emotion as well.
