23. Will brings something home

After Hopper and Joyce successfully rescue Will from the Upside Down (and the hospital clears him, of course), he returns home. By Christmas, it looks like he’s resumed most of his normal day-to-day activities and Joyce hasn’t locked him up in a bubble. (I’m not saying that’s what I would do to my kid, but that’s probably what I would do to my kid.)

Although Will seems to be okay, he excuses himself from dinner one evening to wash his hands. While he’s in the bathroom, he stares at his reflection in the mirror and envisions himself in the Upside Down. But instead of imagining that the monster captured him again, Will just sees the “inverted” version of his house. Because we know that he hid in Castle Byers and that the Upside Down is basically a parallel universe, his vision makes sense. However, it also implies that he doesn’t feel safe anywhere. Not even in his own home.

And to top it off, he brought something with him back to the real world. In addition to his horrible nightmares, he coughs up some sort of slug. Which means, there’s still something festering inside him in some capacity. We don’t know if there’s anything else in his stomach, but the slug alone means that another monster could learn to live in the real world instead of the Upside Down. Like, they’re not dependent on the Upside Down environment.

Which is an incredibly horrifying way to end the first season.
