18. Lucas’ apology and humility

While Eleven was certainly very cool, a lot of people were fascinated by Stranger Things because of its ’80s throwbacks and the way it portrayed the children. Just like Steven Spielberg did in his films like E.T. and the Goonies, Stranger Things fleshed out the children in the same way young boys behave instead of some sort of idealized version of them, where they’re nerdy, goofy, loyal and not afraid to curse. They weren’t necessarily meant to be heroes, but rather, just a few regular boys looking for their friend.

However, something that threw me for a loop was the pragmatic side of Lucas. In the beginning, he was the only one who questioned whether Eleven was being honest or not, and the only one who repeatedly advocated to tell Mike’s mom, Karen Wheeler, what was happening.

And though this eventually escalates to a moment where he fights with his best friends, he bounces back from it in an incredibly humble manner. One that truly confounded me when I watched it. Of course, he apologizes to Mike, but the way he admits that he was wrong to Eleven almost had me tearing up. It’s always nice to see kids be kind to each other, but Lucas went the extra mile to make Eleven feel comfortable again.
