16. Eleven opens the gate

It’s important to recognize, I think, that opening the door to the Upside Down was slightly unintentional. While Dr. Brenner certainly deserves the blame for messing around with something he didn’t quite understand and torturing poor Eleven to do things she didn’t want to do, I’m not sure he quite understood what was going to happen once he tapped into her devastating true power.

In fact, I don’t think she knew either. No one really understood that when Eleven located the spy or killed a few men, she’d eventually rip a hole through the space-time continuum in a way. Though we don’t totally know what happened, we can say that she opened the gate.

And what was waiting on the other side was a seven-foot monster hungry for blood and children and eager to get its hands on just about anything. Adding to the horror, Eleven goes on to blame herself when she learns that Will is missing, which is a lofty thing to live with, especially when you don’t fully understand how it happened.
