11. The explanation behind the Upside Down

For just what it is, this is my favorite moment of the entire first season. First, we learned about the Upside Down and its existence. From what we can gather, it’s a parallel universe that looks exactly like ours. Hence the word “parallel,” of course.

But the thing that Mr. Clarke doesn’t really get into with the boys is the infinite amount of parallels that are present. Or rather, could be present. Though he explains the flea and the acrobat walking on a tightrope, the presence of the Upside Down is just one door. It’s like, the flea can literally crawl around anywhere on said tightrope. We know our present reality, and we know of at least one more. But since the boys are familiar with comics, I suspect we’ll eventually see them come to the conclusion of infinite earths and realities.

And if there are multiple universes, what’s to say that one of them isn’t filled with more than just monsters. Or maybe Mike finds a twelve instead of Eleven. The number of possibilities here is so jarring when you really dig into it, I’ll actually be really disappointed if the Duffer Brothers only focus on the Upside Down we learned about in season 1. They could reboot this show over and over and just jump to a different universe.
