10. Will appears in the wall

Anything in the walls is weird. Whether you grew up near the woods or a lake and you’ve experienced the phenomenon of rats before or whether you have noisy neighbors, there’s nothing more terrifying than hearing something behind the wall that you shouldn’t otherwise be hearing.

The only thing worse than strange noises is seeing strange things. The more Joyce digs into her investigation, the more her house begins to take on a life of its own. However, as we come to learn, it’s actually Will communicating with her through the Upside Down.

The moment the paint on the wall fades away, she sees her son on the other side. Basically, it means her son is in the house — but in a parallel and much darker universe. Just open your mind to the possibility that no matter where you’re sitting, there’s another version of you on another plane of existence doing something else. It’s a difficult thing to wrap our minds around, and maybe you can’t even imagine it, but Joyce came face to face with this possibility.

As she showed later, breaking through the wall won’t take you to the other dimension. So it pops up as it wants to and this unpredictability leads to the WTF factor.
