4. Joyce

Full disclosure, I love Winona Ryder so much and have loved her since Heathers, Mermaids, Little Women, Beetlejuice, Reality Bites and the host of other movies I grew up watching her in. Having said that, I was so thrilled to see her have a career renaissance after playing the role of Will and Jonathan’s mom, Joyce.

I loved mama Byers. She did everything in her power to get her baby boy back after he vanished into thin air. She went to Hopper, who she knew from high school, and told him to dig deeper to find out the truth behind his disappearance. Her persistence to find the truth. Her belief and faith that she was communicating with Will through the phone and later through the Christmas lights still gets me choked up. A mother’s love was on full display in the first season.

When Joyce could see to the Upside Down and saw Will through the wall, she took out the sledgehammer and started hammering that wall like she was a construction worker doing demolition work. The heartbreaking moment of realization that she wasn’t going to find Will was felt all the more by the look of pain and anguish on her face. But she didn’t stop to mourn and grieve after the world told her son had died, she knew he was alive, and she stayed up with an axe in her hand and ready to fight the Demogorgon.

She was going to get her son back, even if it meant trekking through the Upside Down with Hopper. She saved her boy and brought him back home. But let us not forget the heart-to-heart talk she had with Eleven before her bath in the middle school to transport her mind and body into the Upside Down to make contact. She told Eleven how brave she was, and it was just what Eleven needed to hear. Remember, she’s been snatched from her mother at the time of her birth and has been raised as a test subject for a government conspiracy, so this moment of raw human emotion was beautiful.

I hope Joyce has a few reasons to smile in the new season and that could be from new cast member Bob Newby, played by Sean Astin, as we’ve seen the two in a production still for ST2.
