Hulu and Spotify Launch $5 Bundle for College Students

For only $5 a month, students can now get access to Hulu and Spotify.

Hulu and Spotify have teamed up to create the ultimate student deal. The package combines Hulu’s basic plan with Spotify Premium. Eligible users can now get access to Hulu’s limited commercial streaming as well as Spotify’s ad-free music streaming. With this offer, students save $13 a month. Hulu’s basic plan usually costs $7.99 a month and Spotify Premium $9.99 a month. This is a steal if you can’t afford music downloads or cable.

Eligible users can sign up on Spotify’s registration page. Students with Spotify Premium can turn on Hulu for free. Likewise, Hulu users can merge their accounts with Spotify Premium.

There are a few catches. The deal is only for students 18 years or older in the United States. Students must also directly subscribe through Spotify. You can’t sign up if you have Spotify Premium through your cell phone service. Oh, and you won’t get away with a fake student account since Spotify uses a third party program to check student registration.

The two services certainly have a huge net of subscribers. According to Adweek, Hulu has 47 million users and Spotify has 60 million paying listeners. As a result, the partnership benefits both companies.

First of all, the combined service gives Hulu an edge over Netflix. T-Mobile recently offered free Netflix subscriptions to families with unlimited data plans. A discount with Spotify would give music lovers a reason to sign up with Hulu. As services, Hulu and Spotify differ enough where a joint discount would be worth the price.

Spotify also has an advantage over Apple Music by joining Hulu. As Tech Crunch observes, Hulu’s shows are more popular than Apple series like Planet of the Apps. Hulu streams both network shows and its own content.

Not long ago, Spotify announced Tom Calderone’s departure. Calderone had been brought in to head Spotify’s video and podcast efforts. However, no video series came to fruition under his guidance. Since his departure, Spotify has pledged to focus on video programming for popular playlists like RapCaviar.

Spotify’s partnership with Hulu appears to be another part of its video strategy. In a blog post, MIDiA Research’s Mark Mulligan notes that this move gives Spotify “a smart way to get into the video market without getting in over its head.”

Don’t feel left out if you’re not a student. This deal marks the start of Hulu and Spotify’s partnership. In the future, it seems like the services will create deals for wider audiences.
