7. The Duffer Brothers wanted to do the It remake

While Tim Curry has appeared in a number of wonderful roles, his time as Pennywise in It remains as one of the best. He portrayed a very creepy, wisecracking clown in the 1990 miniseries. Of course, that was more than 20 years ago. Which means Hollywood was destined to order a remake about five years ago.

Ironically, the movie’s been in development for a lot longer than five years. But the studio kept it (no pun intended) in limbo for quite some time as Cary Fukunaga workshopped the idea. Ultimately, he clashed with the studio over creative differences and stepped back from directing.

But guess who wanted it before Cary Fukunaga? That’s right — the Duffer Brothers.

"Matt: We asked, and that’s why we ended up doing this, because we’d asked Warner Brothers. I was like, “Please,” and they were like, “No.” This was before Cary Fukunaga. This was a long time ago. Ross: When we asked to do it was before, then he got on it afterwards because he’s established. So, he got on it and we were excited just because we’re huge fans of what he does, and one of the few people who hasn’t made a bad movie."

Again, development for it began around 2009, so the Duffer Brothers didn’t have the same clout. Though I imagine they would’ve made a great It adaptation (which hits theaters later this year), I’m glad that ended up with Stranger Things instead.
