6. The Duffer Brothers also name anime as one of their influences

Everyone who has seen Stranger Things loves picking up all the references. (For me, I’m just like “ooh, Star Wars.”) But most people saw something and went, “oh, yeah, I totally remember those things.” I mean, the show really gave it their all when it came to transporting the audience back to that decade.

But it wasn’t just about Stephen King and Steven Spielberg. The Duffer Brothers admit that there’s plenty of other influences, like anime, hidden in there. And while people figured out most of them, they still feel surprised by what the fans noticed:

"Ross: I think there’s two things. One is anime. Matt: Everyone’s picked up everything. There’s a kind of obscure anime called Elfen Lied, and it was like the first trailer, someone was like, in the comments, someone pointed out, “Oh, this reminds me of Elfen Lied.” Ross: They picked up on that, but not very many people. That’s deep cut."

The plot of Elfen Lied according to IMDB actually sounds pretty intense. Obviously, it’s not really for children. But Elfen Lied tells the story of two students who befriend a young girl, who is actually a serial killer.

So… Stranger Things.
