30. Oh, yeah, and all those movie references? The kids had to watch some of those

Of course, it’s all about the references. But to really prepare for the roles, the Duffer Brothers asked each child actor to do their homework and watch those movies. Especially Millie Bobby Brown, who they gave practically no speaking lines to. So she relied mostly on her expression and understanding of the character.

While Millie Bobby Brown watched specific movies, her character Eleven channeled a particular character.

According to Indiewire:

"“They told me to watch ‘Poltergeist,’ ‘Stand By Me’ and ‘The Goonies,’” Brown said. “And basically, if you put that in a blender, you get ‘Stranger Things.’ You see parts of ‘The Goonies’ and ‘Poltergeist,’ but it’s not that. It’s very independent. It resembles other movies, but it’s not those movies. It’s completely different.” For playing Eleven, the creators gave her a specific reference point. “They told me that the performance that they wanted me to resemble was ‘E.T.’ and sort of that relationship between E.T. and the kids. I thought that was very interesting, and Matt and Ross were like, ‘Basically you’re going to be an alien.’ [laughs]”"

Basically, you’re going to be an alien.
