28. Shawn Levy only directed so the Duffers could finish writing

Because Stranger Things was essentially their baby, the Duffer Brothers didn’t necessarily feel the need to relinquish control of the project. They handled a lot of the work and were really hands on. But sometimes, you just can’t do it all. Even when you have an identical twin.

So while the Duffer Brothers took the time to finish writing the season, they asked their producer Shawn Levy to step in as director. Of course, they didn’t want to lose time and Levy didn’t mind helping out.

You can watch the full interview here.

At about 17 minutes in, Shawn Levy starts talking about how he directed episodes three and four, and how the scripts were “so good.” Obviously, Levy tried to act like it was no big deal, but you can totally see the excitement on his face while he talks about it. Meanwhile, the Duffer Brothers needed a break to go write episodes six through eight. Actually, Levy accidentally says there are 10 episodes. But he corrects himself quickly: “I didn’t tell you about the two secret episodes?”

Also, how strapped were the Duffer Brothers that they began production with only five episodes in their back pocket? How long did they think that was going to last?
