20. Meryl Streep inspired Winona Ryder’s haircut

It’s truly hard to imagine anyone other than Winona Ryder in the role of Joyce Byers. She portrayed the character to spectacularly as both a protective mother and someone who would give her sons any independence they wanted as long as they were safe and happy. And there are so many examples that prove this, like how she left Lonnie, respected Will’s fort, and knew how badly Jonathan wanted to go to NYU. Plus, she never gave up on finding her son.

But part of what lent to Ryder’s believability as the character was her look. She always had a wild look in her eyes and she walked around without a single regard as to what people thought of her.

Furthermore, her very of-the-decade hairstyle, complete her look. And this actually an idea from the actress herself, who drew inspiration from Meryl Steep’s character in Silkwood. With a screenplay by Nora Ephron and Alice Arlen, Silkwood followed the life of Karen Silkwood, who mysteriously died in a car accident before revealing the misdeeds of the nuclear power plant she worked at. The film came out in 1983, which is the exact decade Stranger Things came out.

So let’s just say this particular choice is really on the nose.
