13. The Department of Energy responded to their portrayal in the series

Before we really understood what was happening in the Stranger Things storyline, we were introduced to Dr. Brenner at the Department of Energy. Of course, the depth of his nefarious intention remains wholly unexplored. But we do know that the fictional lab seen in Hawkins wants to hide some otherwise gruesome experiments.

In response to how the Department of Energy was depicted on the show, the real Department of Energy of the United States issued a statement:

"There are several scenes in the show where Hawkins Laboratory researchers don full body suits and protective gear to walk through a peculiar portal, which transports them to an alternate dimension known as “The Upside Down.” While the Energy Department doesn’t chart parallel universes, it does help power the exploration of new worlds. We’re talking outer space, not the bizarro cosmos in “Stranger Things.”"

Cleverly, the Department of Energy used this opportunity to educate the people as to what they really do. Further, the author explained the aspects of the show that were clearly fictional and which ones weren’t before making sure we all know that the Department of Energy doesn’t “mess with monsters.”

I like that they sent this message, and thus, respect the Energy Department a lot more now.
