Virunga focuses on the the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo that is facing threats from three sides.

On one side, the park is threatened by the big oil industry, Soco International, which is exploring the area for oil. On another side, conflicts between tribes and groups in the region also threaten the park. And, on the other side, poachers frequently invade the park to hunt for mountain gorillas, an endangered species.

Four people are featured in the film and present the issue for the audience: Andre Bauma, a Gorilla Specialist; Rodrigue Mugaruka Katembo, head ranger at the park; Emmanuel de Merode, the park warden; and, Mélanie Gouby, a French journalist.

The film was also produced by Leonardo DiCaprio. Virunga was nominated for an Academy Award at the 2015 Oscars for Best Documentary.
