When Will Sense8 Season 2 Be Released On Netflix?

When will Sense8 Season 2 be on Netflix?

Last month, Netflix finally announced their original series Sense8, created by Lana and Andy Wachowski and Michael Straczynski, had been renewed for a second season.

Update: Sense8 Season 2 will be on Netflix on May 5, 2017!

As it turns out, the eight sensates celebrated their birthday on August 8, and that is also the day Netflix announced the renewal with a cool video, which was posted to the official Netflix twitter account:

Since then, we’ve heard a lot of questions about when Sense8 Season 2 will be released on Netflix. While we don’t know the answer yet because Netflix hasn’t made that announcement, we have a pretty good idea of when to expect Sense8 based on past Netflix original release dates and what we know about Sense8.

Most of the Netflix originals will have new seasons released generally around the time the first season premiered. There’s about a month of wiggle room with the release date. For example, here are the House of Cards release dates to see what I mean:

Season 1: Feb. 1, 2013

Season 2: Feb. 14, 2014

Season 3: Feb. 27, 2015

Sense8 Season 1 was released on Netflix on June 5, 2015. If Sense 8 follows the same trend as most of the Netflix originals, we can expect Sense8 Season 2 to be released on Netflix some time in June. If Season 2 is released on the first Friday in June, like the first season, then Sense8 Season 2 would be available for streaming on June 3, 2016.

That seems like a pretty good release date, right?

While that date seems as good as any other, we still don’t know when exactly Netflix made the decision to move forward with Season 2 of Sense8. At the end of July, the Sense8 cast and Straczynski spoke at the Summer TCA Press Tour, and they admitted they had not heard if Sense8 was coming back for Season 2 or not. That was nearly two months after the first season release.

For most shows, that two-month wait wouldn’t make any difference, but for Sense8, it’s much different. Sense8 started production in June 2014 and didn’t wrap production until the end of January 2015. The season was also shot in nine cities in eight different countries. That’s a lot of work, a lot of travel, and not a lot of time to put a full season together.

If the creators and producers didn’t know until August that there would be a Season 2, it’s likely they weren’t scouting locations, scheduling shoots, or possibly even writing the scripts for Season 2, which would mean that would still have to happen, making a June 2016 release seem like a very quick turnaround.

No one has reported any news about when production begins on Sense8 Season 2. Straczynski has tweeted within the last few days that he has been “writing nonstop for days,” which would indicate he’s probably working on Season 2 of Sense8.

I really hope Netflix can release Sense8 Season 2 in June, but simple math suggests we really shouldn’t “expect” to see Season 2 until much later in the summer or fall of 2016.

If I had to guess, I would guess the release date of Sense8 Season 2 will be Monday, August 8, 2016, which is also one year after the Sense8 Season 2 renewal announcement and another sensate birthday! That day has worked out for predictions for me in the past, so I’ll just stick to it!
